THE LAST GREAT WILDERNESS

The estate is owned by the Fentener van Vlissingen family and is known as "the last great wilderness" of Scotland. Following the late Paul van Vlissingen the van Vlissingen family considers itself to be the guardian of that land and manages it accordingly. The Letterewe Estate is renowned as one of the few remaining undisturbed habitats for some of Europe's rarest species of birds and animals. It stretches over some 90,000 acres of majestic mountains and beautiful lochs, and is uninterrupted by any surfaced roads or modern developments. It is home to the golden eagle and the pine marten, home to otters and northern divers and to 6,000 red deer, numerous wild goats and a herd of Highland cattle. During your stay you will be able to study the geology of the most ancient cliffs in Britain (disputably between 650 and 625 million years old!). You can wander through the most northerly natural oak forest in the world, and experience something similar to the ancient Caledonian forest in the undisturbed vegetation of the inland loch islands.
